What is Autism?

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental difference. It is not an illness or disease—autism simply means the brain works in a different way. With the right recognition and support, autistic people can thrive.

Every autistic person is unique. Some may need very little support, while others may require daily help from family or carers. Autism often overlaps with other conditions, such as ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, or depression.

Common signs of autism in adults include:

  • Difficulty understanding what others are thinking or feeling

  • Anxiety in social situations

  • Struggles with friendships and relationships

  • Appearing blunt or “rude” without intending to

  • Taking things literally (e.g. missing sarcasm or idioms)

  • Distress when routines change

  • Strong sensitivity to detail, sounds, smells, or patterns

  • Intense focus on particular subjects or activities

Autism can present differently in women and men. For example, autistic women often mask or hide their difficulties, which can make diagnosis more challenging.

Support, Not Cure

Autism is not something to be “cured.” Support focuses on helping people understand their strengths and challenges, while improving quality of life. This may include:

  • Building communication and social understanding

  • Managing anxiety and stress

  • Supporting flexibility and problem-solving

  • Developing emotional regulation

  • Accessing therapy and peer networks

At pause…, we offer therapeutic support alongside diagnosis, ensuring individuals and families feel supported every step of the way.

Adult Autism Assessment

Our Adult Autism Assessment is suitable for anyone who suspects they may be autistic but has not previously received a diagnosis.

  • A detailed written report, including recommendations for ongoing support and care

Pricing:

  • Adult Autism Assessment – £970
(includes a 3-hour consultation in person or online, full diagnostic report, and recognised diagnosis)
